De-But is the product of the project, How to be a Dyslexic Artist & Other Stories at The Tetley; which developed over a series of conversations and costume fabrication workshops, reflected on the experiences of adult dyslexics.

A number of shared experiences became apparent throughout the process, but most significant for this work were ideas of shame and social masking common amongst the group; that speak to a much broader mindset of assimilation. The project continually held notions of clothing and costume at its centre, considering the creation of an alternative persona and performance. In response to this each participant was invited to contribute their favourite item of clothing to the pin-board.
